For years scuba diving vacations have been popular in Hawaii. Often you will walk into the water from the shore, but on other occasions a boat will take you out to deeper waters. People have reported seeing sharks. If you are there during whale season you might see a humpback too.

You might consider renting a condo so you can have your own kitchen and laundry facilities. The less hassle you experience while trying to find guest services and restaurants, the more time you have for diving.
